PATH is seeking a Senior Accountant for the International Accounting Services (IAS) team. With approximately 20% of expense transactions incurred in the field, the IAS Team is an integral part of the global accounting and internal control organization. The IAS team consists of seven accounting staff located at our headquarters in Seattle as well as in Nairobi, Kenya. The Senior Accountant is responsible for providing the quality control review process of international transactions to ensure the accuracy of the accounting/bookkeeping activity in over 20 offices located in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. This includes, but is not limited to, review of field office transactions during the monthly close, provide support and guidance to field office finance/accounting personnel, perform reconciliations of complicated general ledger accounts, in addition to other responsibilities such as monitoring field office compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), PATH policies and procedures, evaluation of field offices accounting processes to establish proper internal control functions.  Primary responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze field office expense reports to ensure compliance with non-for-profit GAAP, organizational policies and procedures.
  • Communicate and follow up with field office on findings and issues, provide guidance and training to staff in field offices.
  • Prepare, analyze and complete reconciliations of GL accounts.
  • Provide training and guidance to field offices staff in formal and informal setting.
  • Develop training materials and define scope of training based on assessment of trainees’ needs.
  • Travel to field offices to provide support and training, about 1-3 times per year depending on the needs and funding.
  • Manage, direct and participate in team projects.
  • Review and evaluate internal controls in field offices. Provide necessary guidance for improvement and changes.
  • Recommend, contribute and develop procedures and policies, develop training materials and guidance.
  • Assist in coordination and preparation of internal and external audits.
 
Required Skills
  • Knowledge of USAID regulations (OMB Circular A-122, or Super Circular) preferred.
  • Highly skilled in complex account reconciliations with keen attention to details and ability to analyze data, research information to clarify issues, find and propose appropriate solutions.
  • High level of proficiency with computers and must have strong skills in MS Office Software, particularly usage of complex Excel spreadsheet formulas and macros. Access database, Dynamics DL (Solomon), and QuickBooks experience a plus.
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral. Demonstrated ability to communicate information and ideas effectively via email, phone, or in-person, with high diplomacy and cross-cultural sensitivity. Experience in multi-lingual environment is preferred.
  • Proven ability to balance multiple competing demands, maintain attention to details, and consistently meet deadlines under time pressure.
  • Effective work independently as well as have strong ability to collaborate as a team member from different geographical location.
 
Required Experience
Undergraduate degree in accounting or related field or equivalent experience.  Minimum 3 years of broad accounting and/or audit experience and demonstrated strong capabilities in general accounting system/processes and internal controls implication, complex bank account, receivable and payable and other GL accounts reconciliation, payroll processes and related government reporting, developing, conducting and facilitating training activities.  Accounting multi-currency and partner reporting is highly desirable.  Experience working for international organization, non-for-profit experience preferred.
