The Position
Reporting to the EOHS Officer-Research, The Technical Assistant (Research) will help ILRI manage cold storage and audit the samples ILRI currently has on cold storage and free up freezer space.

Key responsibilities:
  • Sort all biological samples stored in -80,-40,-20 AND +4 degree freezers in designated trays and boxes
  • Identify all biological samples stored as per the labels given
  • Prepare a hard copy catalogue of all the biological materials identified and separate the non-labelled in a different section of the freezer
  • Catalogue the identified samples on soft copy in the pre-set excel spread sheets database.
  • Ensure all materials catalogued are easily identified in the freezers
  • Liaise with Principal Investigators and Research Technicians responsible for particular freezers in the identification of biological samples with no labels, and samples that do not belong to them
  • Catalogue all biological samples that have not been identified and circulate the list to both BecA and Biotechnology scientists for claim and identification
  • Ensure a standby freezer is always available and functioning
  • Ensure an audited freezer is lockable before moving to the next freezer audit.
  • Ensure Engineering staff and lab management are made aware of a freezer that is emptied after the audit.
  • Provide weekly Updates to either EOHS Manager or EOHS officer on the progress of the freezer audit
  • Arrange for next freezer audit one week in advance and inform the relevant persons
  • Ensure dry ice orders are made on time, supply is constant and usage is auditable
  • Arrange for proper disposal of all biological samples that have been approved for disposal by Responsible Principal Investigator and measure the weight of samples disposed
  • Maintain samples outside the freezer in dry ice at all times
Requirements:
  • Diploma in Environmental or Biological Sciences (A degree in Environmental or Biological Sciences is an added advantage) .
  • 2 years’ experience working in a research laboratory setting.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Good Interpersonal Skills and communication skills
  • Adherence to set timelines.
Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus.  The position is on 1 year fixed term contract

Job level and salary
This position is job Grade 1C  KES 45,019.  This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
Location: The position will be based at the ILRI campus.
