The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. Humidtropics, a CGIAR Research Program (CRP), seeks to transform the lives of the rural poor in tropical Americas, Asia and Africa. Innovative integrated systems research in the humid tropics will help poor farm families, often led by women, boost their agricultural productivity while preserving the land for future generations. ILRI is heavily engaged in the Humidtropics, leading Strategic Research Theme 1 on Systems Analysis and Global Synthesis with strong inputs into other CRP’s. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Post Doctoral Scientist who can use diverse remote sensing, GIS (Geographic Information System) and geostatistical techniques; conduct local to regional scale studies including spatial and temporal patterns of biotic, abiotic and human processes. Applicants should have a strong background in both on the ground and desktop approaches for analysing landscapes to regions.

Responsibilities:
  • Developing/adapting methods for landscape mapping on agricultural landscapes in developing countries;
  • Characterization of structural and functional aspects of landscapes;
  • Performing scenario analysis of intensification and environmental impact across scales and integration levels;
  • Contributing to capacity building through training of PhD students on remote sensing, GIS and systems analysis;
  • Contributing to the development of new research proposals;
  • Publishing the results of his/her research in peer-reviewed international journals.
Essential Skills and Qualifications will include:
  • PhD in landscape ecology, agro-ecology or environmental sciences (PhD must have been attained within the last 3 years);
  • Experience with remote sensing techniques, GIS and spatial statistics;
  • Programming skills and map servers’ management will be considered assets;
  • Track record of publishing in peer-reviewed articles;
  • Work experience in developing countries including Africa, Asia or Latin America;
  • Knowledge of French and Spanish will be considered an asset.
Post location: This position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
Position level: Post-doctoral Scientist (4A).
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
