The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a research technician to work with a team carrying out research on improving utilization of farm animal genetic resources.

Job purpose:
To manage the collection and analysis of quantitative genetics data for reporting by research scientist. This involves providing key statistical outputs and designing presentations formats for key findings; developing and updating livestock monitoring and feedback databases; developing and auditing data management protocols for generic data on animal production systems and environments; supporting and strengthening database management; supporting and monitoring web resource maintained by projects; working with multinational partners and stakeholders as various projects demands.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical input and support in quantitative data related to animal genetic resources compilation and analyses of the data collated.
  • Provide support in management, processing and use of livestock databases and data in MISTRO and follow-up documentation, contact details, networking arrangements between various partners.
  • Contribute to research outputs and scientific reporting related to livestock genetics and breeding information in project countries under supervision of scientists.
  • Organise and contribute to capacity building through relevant supportive training in animal breeding and genetic data collection and management, group discussions and provision of feedbacks to livestock keepers and industries players.
  • Participate in institutional training and seminars.
Skills and Competencies:
  • BSc in Animal Production related field with specialization in Animal Genetics and Breeding (partially completed or completed MSc in Animal Genetics & Breeding is an advantage)
  • 5 years of relevant work experience;
  • Good Knowledge  of statistics, MS–Office and livestock databases;
  • Experience with computer software for quantitative for genetic analyses;
  • Experience in a research environment;
  • Ability to work independently and with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Good organisation and problem solving skills;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Terms of Appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, whose initial contract will be for a two (2) year term renewable subject to availability of funds and individual performance. Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided within ILRI’s NRS scheme.
Job level and salary: This position is job Grade 2C KES 116,417 per month.  This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
Location: The position will be based at the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya.
