Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness, influencing attitudes, behavior and decisions related to the local and global environment, and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide. This post is located in UNEP/DCPI at the Nairobi duty station. Under the supervision of the Information Officer, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

Responsibilities
1. Provide reference services: Review a variety of sources to identify appropriate materials that meet the information needs of the Organization and its information clientele; Perform searches of a wide variety of bibliographic and full-text databases to locate specific items requested; Initiate claims and obtains updated materials, in connection with research requests by library patrons; Selecting appropriate sources from library networks, online databases, or the Internet; Respond both orally and in writing to clients on the outcome of their requests.
2. Manage databases and ensure their integrity: Assist in development and maintenance of relevant databases, keeping data accurate and current, and preparing new material; Perform collection maintenance using knowledge of various classification systems and libraries' specialized collection arrangements; Provide technical support for virtual library digitization operations; Participate in the creation of electronic and other reference tools, and the compilation of bibliographies.
3. Outreach: Ensure that information queries received through the 'UNEP info' and email accounts on the organization and its resources are addressed in a timely manner, either directly or by channelling the query to the appropriate staff member for response; Periodically review the website and identify broken links for deletion; Prepare new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages.
4. Training: Provide technical support and instruction to patrons on the use of the virtual library including databases and programs thereon; Train new staff members and interns on reference work and the use of various databases available as well as the library management system.
5. Provide administrative support: Assist in the preparation of terms of reference, recruitment, interview of consultants, interns and UNVs; Liaise with appropriate offices for, furniture and office supplies; Draft routine correspondence; Respond both orally and in writing to a broad range of queries and information requests on services; Maintain statistics on service and workload measures.
6. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education
Completion of secondary school is required. Supplementary training in Library Science and Management is required.

Work Experience
Seven years of experience in Library management or related area is required. Experience within the United Nations system is an added advantage.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice
Appointment against this post is on a local basis. External candidates will be considered only when no suitable internal candidate from the duty station is identified. The candidate is responsible for any travel expenses incurred to take-up the appointment. Staff Members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her.
