Job Description 
Job Title: Nurse/ Midwife- Maternity 
Reporting To: Maternity in charge 
Matrix Management: Kenya Program 
Base Location: Dadaab 
Summary: 
This position exists under the Health and Nutrition. The overall objective is to provide safe, effective and curative health services, targeting the most important causes of illness and death among the refugee population. The position is placed under the supervision of the Maternity In charge and the Head nurse. 
Medical: 

• Provide safe motherhood through safe delivery, prevent complications related to pregnancy and child birth 
• Perform triage procedures and identify patients who need acute care and ensure patient evaluation to assess progress 
• Ensure timely intervention and proper physical handing over of patients during every shift 
• Ensure department is covered 24 hours and staff stay in their stations until shift are over and handing over has taken place 
• Take charge of the ward while on duty and responsible for all incidents that happen while on duty and take part in all audits of incidents. 
• Ensure patients referred to Dadaab theatre is escorted by qualified during the day and auxiliary nurse/staffs at night. 
• Ensure resuscitation tray is also up to date and ensures stocks of drugs are replenished after every use 
• Monitor mothers in labour using partograph and ensures proper documentation and monitor progress, liaise with nurse in charge and camp doctor on clients with poor progress so that action can be taken 
• Provide post abortal care (PAC) to clients and provide counselling on family planning 
• Ensure Birth notification is issued to all children born in the maternity unit.  
• Ensure correct decontamination procedure of instruments, packing and are sent for sterilisation in good time. 
• Take part in CME, departmental meeting, maternal audit and verbal autopsy 
• Provide prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV during labour and delivery 
• Provide care targeting to reduce the major cause of mortality in women of child bearing age such as hypertension in pregnancy and anaemia related to haemorrhage 
• Provide health education one on one and group on exclusive breastfeeding, balance diet, child spacing, family planning and importance of post natal clinic 
• Participate in daily ward rounds and oversee management of patients after the ward round in consultation with the ward in charge and camp doctor as necessary 
• Involve the ANC nurse, outreach, nutrition and family members in providing on-going support and ensuring integration of continued care for high risk clients 
• Maintain system for tracking the distribution, utilization and replenishment of maternal incentives. 
• Ensures ward/maternity supplies are ordered in time and correct use and proper inventory 
• Undertake daily dump dusting of the ward/ labour ward and weekly high dusting is done to reduce cross infection 
• Maintain up-to-date the drugs, supplies and equipment inventory in the ward 
• Ensure MOH/UNHCR RH guideline, policies and rules are followed 
• Prepares equipment and assist the doctor/clinician during examination and treatment 
• Coordination of preventives, curatives, promotive and rehabilitative service. 
• Maintain system for tracking the distribution, utilization and replenishment of maternal incentives. 
• Maintain up-to-date the drugs, supplies and equipment inventory in the ward 
• Maintain performance expectations in diverse clinical and non-clinical teams, psychological stressful environments 
• Ensure patients in the ward receive treatment as required and all patient documentation is up to date including nursing Cardex, mother and child booklet, observation charts and treatment sheets and registers i.e. HIS register/Delivery registers 
• Liaise with the qualified staff in charge of the ward, Head Nurse and the hospital director to make sure ward materials are adequate (drugs, beds, mattresses, mosquito nets, medical equipment’s etc.) 
• Responsible for the discharge summaries, writes the prescriptions for patients on discharge and provide health education on importance of follow up at the doctors clinic and health post 
• Ensure safe keeping of drugs, medical equipment’s and all other materials in the wards 
• Provide linkage of high risk women to high risk clinic and follow up in collaboration with outreach nurses 
• Provide neonatal care and nurse new-born in new born unit as deemed necessary 
• Ensures that all patients receive quality general nursing care and very sick patients receive primary nursing care 
• Ensure practice of universal infection prevention and good levels of hygiene in maternity unit 
• Provide good infant and young child feeding practises such as exclusive breast feeding and feeding options in positive mothers 
• Provide on job training on incentive staff on importance of hospital delivery, post natal care, family planning and immunisation 
• Provide on job training for cleaners on housekeeping and infection control 
• Participate in tracing of abscondees in conjunction with outreach nurse and community health workers 
• Provide commitment to projects vision and mission, core values statement and code of conducts of IRK 
• Ensure the waste management circuit runs smoothly 
• Participate in weekly morning meeting with the hospital staff and present relevant issues 
• Follow the IRK guidelines and ensure that everybody adhere to them 
• Participate to any special exercise organised in the camps (Nutritional Survey, Mass Campaign) as need be 
• Supervise the auxiliary staff and to give help and advice when needed 

Reporting:
• Report any outbreak potential diseases to the Head Nurse/ outreach nurse 

General 
• Follow the security rules of IRK
• Collaborate with other agencies at camp level
• Respect the internal rules of IRK and the MOH staff regulation
• Respect IRK guidelines
• Carry out any other duties as deemed necessary by the ward in charge or Head nurse 

Note: 
• Can be transferred from one ward or health post to another.
• This job description can be adapted from time to time by IRK Health and Nutrition Project 

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
• Three years post qualification experience. 
• Ability to perform minor obstetric procedures in a busy maternity 
• Registered with the nursing council 
• Ability to work long hours 
• Experience working in North Eastern is an added advantage 
• Female Somali’s preferable
