DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Unit, the incumbent provides translators with e-referenced documents, terminology, information and computerized data retrieval services in subject areas covered by, or involving UNEP, UN-Habitat and other UN organizations, necessary for accurate and uniform translation of documents and publications emanating from UNEP and UN-Habitat.

  1. Referencing of documents requires:

a)    Scanning documents submitted for referencing in order to determine whether all or part of the text has been taken from previously translated sources and, if so, identify those sources;

b)    Identifying and supplying language versions of acronyms, quotations and background documentation;


c)    Providing official language versions of titles of organs, meetings and publications of the United Nations, specialized agencies and other international organizations;

d)    Contacting libraries, Reference and terminology sections and other relevant offices outside UNON to provide or obtain advice on matters of terminology and to obtain documents not available in Nairobi;

e)    Performing research, in documents and reports of the UN organizations and programmes: specialized agencies, Secretariats of conventions etc., besides existing terminology bulletins, technical glossaries and computerized databases.

f)  Perform any other related assignments as may be requested by the Supervisor.


  1. Contributes to UNONTerm database by:

a)    Constantly collecting information to ensure a wide variety of available reference data on different topics covered by UNEP, UN-Habitat, UNON, etc by drawing on new incoming documents and publications for use in translation and editing

b)   Periodically making back-ups of the database to ward loss or corruption of invaluable        information/data for the unit.

Teamwork:  Ability to work in a team setting.


EDUCATION:


Secondary Education or equivalent. Training in the Library or Information Processing.

Experience:
At least 5 years work experience.

Language: English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.   Knowledge of French is an
advantage.

Other skills:
Good knowledge of MS office applications and eRef Tool is desirable.
